A BBQ placed too close to a garden fence sparked a fire that spread to a neighbouring property on Hampshire Street in Hull, prompting Humberside Fire and Rescue to issue a summer safety warning

A fire caused by a BBQ set alight a garden fence and spread to a neighbour’s property damaging two homes – and Humberside Fire and Rescue is now warning about proper BBQ safety in the hot weather.
The fire started on the afternoon of Thursday, July 3 at a home on Hampshire Street, caused by a BBQ that was sitting too close to a fence. The fire spread along the garden fence and into the neighbouring property. Both homes suffered smoke damage and two engines were sent with crews to tackle the blaze. The cause was deemed accidental and no injuries were reported.
Both homes sustained smoke damage after crews spent around an hour dealing with the fire, which started around 12.50pm on Thursday. Humberside Fire and Rescue issued a warning about properly using BBQs as the warm weather continues. A spokesperson said: “Our firefighters were called to Hampshire Street, Hull, at 12.48pm on Thursday 3 July following reports of a fire.
“Two fire engines were sent and crews arrived quickly at the scene. The fire had spread along a garden fence and to the exterior of the property and a neighbouring property, causing smoke damage to both homes. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire and left the scene by 1.45pm. The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental and caused by a BBQ that was too close to a fence. With the warm weather continuing, we are reminding people to take extra care when using BBQs, as they can become dangerous very quickly if not used safely.”
The fire service offered the following advice for before and after using a BBQ.
Before lighting your BBQ:
- Keep it well away from fences, sheds, shrubs and your home.
- Never leave it unattended.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
- Do not use petrol or other accelerants.
- Place it on a firm, non-combustible surface such as patio slabs, not grass.
When you have finished:
- Make sure the BBQ is fully extinguished and cooled before moving.
- Never place hot BBQs or ashes in a bin.
“A few simple precautions can help prevent fires and keep you, your family and your neighbours safe,” the spokesperson said.
