Creative Voice Dance is making a return to Hull New Theatre
The chance to celebrate the next generation of dancers and choreographers from across the region is being offered at a special event in Hull. Creative Voice, Hull Dance Move Together and East Riding Youth Dance will be taking over Hull New Theatre for the show.
On Sunday, February 8, from 6.30pm, the talents of youth dance companies from Hull and the East Riding will be showcased. The night offers young people, who have worked with professional dance teachers to choreograph their own individual pieces, exploring issues important to them through dance.
Some of the performances will be a celebration of the artform and its various styles, from Bharatanatyam and contemporary, to commercial and musical theatre. The groups performing from Hull are part of Hull Dance Move Together, an inclusive and accessible city-wide programme with three strands of opportunities for young people to dance, create and perform.
Bettadayz and Andrew Marvell Youth Centre will be performing for the first time with other groups involved from Bridges, Southern Wiles School of Dance, Ainthorpe Youth Centre, Freedom Road Creative Arts and Pragnya Indian Dance. Students from Wilberforce College, together with their dance teacher Kathryn Kimm, have been creating a new piece with young people from Andrew Marvell Youth Centre.
They have been supporting the group as Move Together Creative Enablers, working as dance leaders and mentors. East Riding Youth Dance will also return after a year away, with The Ambassadors, East Riding Youth Dance Beverley and Riverside Special School performing.

Ruth Drake, Hull City Council’s arts development officer, said: “Creative Voice Dance offers young dancers a huge opportunity to perform in a professional setting, with Hull New Theatre providing the perfect backdrop. For some it will be their first time on a big stage performing to a large audience, so I would encourage friends, family and anyone with an interest in dance to come along.
“By taking part in Creative Voice Dance these dancers support their own individual development and progression in the city and region.” Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “Creative Voice Dance supports the council’s Culture and Heritage Strategy, providing pathways for young people to progress in dance.
“This is an inclusive event ensuring dance is accessible to young people who may not be able to access other opportunities. I very much look forward to seeing them have their chance to shine in the spotlight.”
The event has been organised and supported by Hull City Council, Hull Dance and Yorkshire Dance. Some of the companies will go on to perform at the regional dance platform in Leeds “Fresh”.
Creative Voice is a youth arts partnership led by Hull City Council (Arts Development and Youth Development Service) with Hull Dance and Artlink supporting young people’s pathways and progression routes.
