City’s injury troubles have been an issue all season and will continue into next
Eliot Matazo is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining another anterior cruciate knee ligament (ACL) injury, just minutes into his Hull City comeback.
The midfielder damaged his knee ligaments early on in his comeback game at Charlton Athletic on Saturday, and had to be replaced by Paddy McNair after just 11 minutes.
Matazo had fallen to the lush green grass at The Valley on the edge of the Tigers’ penalty box, with his teammates immediately signalling for help from City’s medical team.
After a lengthy spell of treatment, Matazo did some shuttle runs on the side of the pitch before coming back on, but was unable to continue and had to be replaced just moments later.

The Belgian had suggested to boss Sergej Jakirovic that he didn’t feel the injury was too bad at first, but it’s understood that an MRI scan on Sunday revealed the damage to his left knee, which has come as a devastating blow to the highly-rated ace, who joined the club from Monaco in January 2025.
Matazo had not played a Championship game since damaging his right knee in the defeat at Cardiff City in late February 2025, with this his first outing in 424 days.
Jakirovic admitted starting Matazo in such a big game was a risk, but felt after lengthy consultation with the player himself and the club’s medical staff, it was deemed a calculated risk.
The desperately unfortunate performer will now undergo another lengthy period of rehabilitation as he looks to rebuild his career once again.
