The Tigers continue to outperform expectations based on some stats

Matt Bloomfield has given an insight into the challenge opposition teams have faced when preparing to tackle a resurgent Hull City this season.

Bloomfield, who saw his Oxford United side grab a point against City at the Kassam Stadium on Good Friday afternoon, thanks to Cameron Brannagan’s first-half penalty, which cancelled out Mo Belloumi’s strike.

The U’s head coach is a big advocate of the expected goals (XG) metric and was pleased with the 3.44 he saw from his side, compared to City’s 0.82, though it only yielded one goal from the penalty spot.

Expected goals basically assess the quality of the chances created, and City are second bottom of that table over the course of the season, with only Sheffield Wednesday below them. Their XG over the campaign so far is 52.5, but have actually scored 63.

Despite that, the Tigers remain fifth in the league and on course for a place in the play-offs, with Bloomfield explaining why he believes Sergej Jakirovic’s side have enjoyed so much success so far this term.

Clinical in forward areas. Gelhardt, McBurnie, Joseph. They’re just really clinical in the work that they do,” he told Hull Live when asked to give an insight into planning for the Tigers.

“They don’t create loads and loads, but when they do, they execute on transitions. They’re really good at tidying up messy moments and creating opportunities from there. They’ve got some real good players at the top of the pitch who have been in form, and when you’re confident and you’re in form, that rolls into more confidence and more form and they’ve hit their form and they’ve let it roll this season and that’s why they’ve made the most of so many opportunities that they’ve had.

“The Championship’s an incredible league, it’s a fantastic league and every team’s difficult. Today (Friday) is a different challenge to Southampton we had two weeks ago.

“Every team is slightly different, and against Hull, you’ve got to be defensively switched on at any moment because, like the players I’ve just mentioned, Gelhardt, Joseph, McBurnie, Millar didn’t start, but from the left-hand side, he’s so creative for them, we know that give them half a sniff and they stick it away usually, so we had to make sure we were alive at every opportunity.”
