The free event is coming to Trinity Market this month

Roaming Star Wars characters, a lifesize Lightning McQueen car and cosplay competition are some of the “geek” treats in store for visitors to Trinity Market next weekend. Annual event The Geek Experience is set to return on Saturday, April 11 to the city centre venue offering families free entry.

This the fourth instalment of the day-long event which has previously attracted thousands to the Old Town. From 10am, visitors will be able to peruse stalls selling collectable items, brush up alongside recognisable characters from the worlds of fantasy and sci-fi and take part in an Easter egg hunt.

Organiser Mark Allison says the event offers families a free day out. He said: “I know people aren’t necessarily flush with money at the moment so parents can come out knowing the event is free, and they’ll still get a bit of entertainment.

“And they’ll get a free Easter egg when they do the Easter egg hunt.”

A cosplay competition encourages visitors to dress up as their favourite characters with judging taking place across three age categories: from six to 12 years-old, 12 to 18 years-old and 18 and above. And there will be a photo booth on site for capturing the costume efforts.

Elsewhere in the market, the Geek Experience will bring face painting and outside a lifesize Lightning McQueen – from Disney and Pixar’s Cars movies – will be parked up for photos. Meanwhile K-pop performers will also entertain shoppers outside.

Stall holders will include Rebel Trading Outpost, Betsy Boodle’s Emporium, Crow and Butterfly Horror, Tony’s Comics, Sweet Shack, Scents of Happyness, Pokevend, Bella’s Enchanted and Hanami Hannah.

The event is the brainchild of Mark and business partner Mike Brown. Together they run Luck Box Cards and Collectibles in Trinity Market and specialise in Pokemon cards. The shop began in 2023 and has expanded since thanks to a developing customer base.

Now Mark and Mike are also gearing up to stage The Geek Experience Card Show at The Doubletree Hilton hotel in Hull on June 28. The pair are promising “something Hull has never seen before”.

The Card Show will bring together scores of traders giving collectors chance to buy, sell and swap cards. They promise an event “made by collectors, for collectors” with 100 vendor tables, cake stalls, comic books, 3D-printed collectibles, and a trade night event from late afternoon.
