Hull Fair has been officially opened by the city’s Lord Mayor, councillor Cheryl Payne, with the traditional ringing of a bell on the waltzer ride.

The annual event, which is now in its 731st year, is one of the largest travelling fairs in Europe.

It attracts about 600,000 visitors during its week-long stay next to West Park.

The fair runs until Saturday 18 October.

In her speech declaring the fair open, the lord mayor wished everyone “a superb week of fun and entertainment”.

New rides for this year include what is being billed as the UK’s tallest ride, the Big Ben Tower, which is 280ft (85m) high, and the Skyfall drop tower.

The opening times for the week are:

Friday 10 October – 17:00 to 23:00 BST

Saturday 11 October – 12:00 to 23:00

Sunday 12 October – Closed

Monday 13 October to Friday 17 October – 14:00 to 23:00

Saturday 18 October – 12:00 to 23:00
