Willie Peters was pleased with the professional showing Hull KR turned in against Castleford Tigers but he was even happier to see his side secure the shut out at Wheldon Road.
Rovers won 44-0 against a Tigers team playing the game in the midst of turmoil following Ryan Carr’s suspension earlier in the week, and Peters’ side were the better side for huge chunks of the game scoring eight tries on the night.
However, they didn’t have things all their own way and they had to show desperation and tenacity to defend their own line on several occasions throughout the contest. Ultimately, they managed to keep Castleford out to record their first shut out of the season in Super League and that’s something that Peters will take a lot of pride in.
“Really happy with the second half, a very professional performance,” the head coach said. “Obviously getting that zero is something we pride ourselves in and we haven’t done that too often this year so really pleased with that.
“I thought the first half with energy levels we weren’t where we need to be, but what I’m happy about is that players addressed it at half-time. We speak about it at half-time and then they put it into action. That’s the pleasing part.
“It was only 10-0 in the first half and we don’t let the scoreboard dictate how we think we’re going but I didn’t think we were where we needed to be. But on the flipside, the second half, I was really pleased.
“There’s expectations that the players have for each other, standards and there was certain parts in the first half where the standards weren’t where we needed them to be.
“The second half was extremely professional in how they went about it. There was something like 40 tackles inside the 20 that we had to defend. They throw a lot of shape at your, they play a lot of rugby and I thought we handled it really well. So it’s a good sign.
“You could see what it meant to get the zero. Most teams at the top of the league would pride themselves in that as well. It says a lot about you as a team. You get belief from that, turning teams away. They’re all good signs and a step in the right direction in terms of how we want to defend and we scored some nice tries as well.”
