Terry Buck’s daughter said: “I just wanted to know why”
On Friday, July 31 2026, Hull funeral director Robert Bush was jailed for 20 years.
The 48-year-old left bodies to decompose at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors’ premises in the city, gave bereaved families the ashes of other people and stole money donated from collections at funerals. The “horror” and revulsion felt by the families who had lost loved ones was revealed at Hull Crown Court during a series of powerful and harrowing victim statements during the first four days of the five-day sentencing hearing.
Over the coming weeks, we will be publishing those statements – from families who had cruelly been taken advantage of when they were at their most vulnerable. Their stories need to be told, and we will ensure that they are, for as long as it takes.
I am the daughter of Terence Geoffrey Buck, who we know as Terry. I would say the first police visit we had was worse than losing my Dad in the first place.
We had heard something had happened to do with Legacy earlier that same day and wondered if it was likely to have anything to do with us as we had arranged for a pure cremation for my Dad through Legacy. We had a knock on the door from the police late that night and I have to say we felt numb at what we were told.
It was almost disbelief as it’s one of those things that happens to someone else. I was asked lots of questions by the police officers in order to for them to try and formally identify my Dad. It was awful.
I had what I was told by Legacy were my Dads ashes upstairs. I gave these to the police officers that night as I couldn’t bear to have them in the house any longer. It’s heartbreaking to know the ashes we had cared for in our house weren’t my Dad. I feel for the person whose ashes they are and the family of whoever those ashes belong to as they don’t have their loved one with them either.
You’re meant to be able to trust a funeral director. You don’t expect to lose someone twice and have to arrange a second funeral arrangement for someone.
We were starting to move on a little bit after my Dad’s pure cremation. After this all came out we felt like we were right back at square one and having to go through it all again, but it was far worse than the first time.
I just wanted to know why. Why would someone you trusted do something like this. I didn’t really have any other questions, I just wanted to know why.
We made an arrangement for my Dad’s cremation and paid what was asked as a pre-arrangement. You expect those services to be honoured and delivered when the time comes.
I expected Dad to be looked after and treat with dignity and respect once he went to Legacy. This was far from the case.
