‘There’s never been a better time to be part of Hull’

Hull City’s against-the-odds promotion into the Premier League has been described as a ‘game changer’ for the city, by the leader of Hull City Council. The Liberal Democrats‘ Cllr Mike Ross has said “there’s never been a better time to be part of Hull”.

After staying in the Championship by the skin of their teeth this time last year, few expected Hull City to be battling for promotion to the Premier League this season. However, despite having faced a transfer embargo, the Tigers managed to secure their place in the top flight after beating Middlesbrough at Wembley on Saturday.

Hull City’s place in the world’s most watched sports league for the first time in almost a decade is expected to benefit more than just the club itself. The positives of increased tourism and exposure will likely be seen across the city, not just inside the MKM Stadium.

The promotion is a “game changer” in what is “a landmark year for Hull,” Cllr Ross said. He added: “What this means to the club, the fans, and the city is nothing short of fantastic. Hull’s presence in the top flight of English football is just another pull to our amazing city and I’m excited to see the opportunities that arise as a result.”

The club has not been in England’s top flight since the 2016/17 season, having even spent a brief spell in the third tier in the meantime. City’s return to the Premier League means clubs long associated with the top tier of English football, such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton, will each visit the MKM next season.

Hull City’s success follows a historic year for Hull KR which is set to continue with another chance of glory this weekend when the Robins face Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley. “With a top tier Premier League club, two top rugby league sides, a maritime heritage worth celebrating and a cultural legacy that will last generations, there’s never been a better time to be part of Hull,” Cllr Ross added.

Away from sporting success, this year is set to see the completion of a number of high profile city centre projects. Both Queen’s Gardens and the Maritime Museum will see their refurbishments completed.
