The Tigers’ defender will get his first taste of the top-flght with City next term

Summer 2025 was dominated by transfer discussions surrounding Charlie Hughes and goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, and whether the pair would leave Hull City.

Hughes was the subject of strong interest from Coventry City, who saw a number of bids rebuffed by owner Acun Ilicali, with Frank Lampard desperate to sign him.

The Sky Blues’ interest continued throughout the summer window, but despite the club’s transfer restrictions, they held firm and kept the defender at the MKM Stadium, and they did so again in January.

Boss Sergej Jakirovic spoke about his feeling that Hughes would be better suited staying at City for another season, and behind the scenes, the club were aware that he’d probably move on this summer, if they remained in the Championship, and they were accepting of that.

Hughes has shown just why he’s regarded as one of the best defenders outside the Premier League, and now, he’ll be heading into the second tier with Hull City. Those conversations can now be put to bed, and it’s likely he’ll be tied down to a new long-term contract.

Ilicali could have taken the £12m last summer; he could perhaps have tempted Sky Blues owner Doug King to pay a couple of million pounds more and done a deal, but he held off. A decision was made to keep Hughes along with Pandur to give the club the best chance this season, and now, the Tigers can look forward to the riches of the top flight, and Hughes will be a key part of that story.

Taking the money would have been easy, perhaps some would say sensible, given the club had just been hit by a flurry of transfer restrictions, and were not in the fortunate position of having parachute payments. Their reality is having to sell to bring players in.

Essentially, by turning down £12m/£14m last summer, they’ve turned that into a £200m success story because Hughes is a player capable of flourishing in the Premier League.

For City, the club is now going to be operating in a different market, playing in the biggest league in the world, and now, they have much more control over their transfer business, and Hughes will be a big part of Jakirovic’s squad next term.
