New research has shown more people from Yorkshire have visited London than the county’s iconic landmarks like The Shambles in York and Robin Hood’s Bay

When people think of Yorkshire, they likely picture the beautiful scenery of the Peak District and the Dales.

But it turns out that the majority of people who live here have never actually been to the places that make the area famous.

New research has found that half of Yorkshire residents have never actually explored the Peaks, while 46% have never been to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Only 54% of locals have been to Whitby Abbey, and 61% have never been to York Minster.

In comparison, 79% of those surveyed by taxi company Veezu have been to London.

The landmarks that most of those living in the region haven’t been to were revealed as Top Withens – the site that inspired the famous novel and movie Wuthering Heights – as 87% said they have never visited – and Broughton Hall (81%), the historic estate where Channel 4 series A Woman of Substance was filmed.

Veezu’s new research comes ahead of the May Bank Holiday, and the company’s bosses hope it might inspire Yorkshire residents to use the long weekend to explore their local area.

It found that 62% of those surveyed believe the UK has just as much to offer as Europe, with a massive 73% saying they hope to explore more of what our isles have to offer in future.

“With the data revealing so many of Yorkshire’s gems are still yet to be experienced by both Brits across the country and the region’s own residents, this Bank Holiday weekend is the perfect time to head to the county and experience what it has to offer.

“Whether it’s a weekend escape or a day trip on your doorstep, getting around easily makes all the difference, and we’re here to help people experience Yorkshire at its very best.”
