The dynamic midfielder has enjoyed a fine season at the MKM Stadium
Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic says he’s pleased the club have activated the one year option in Regan Slater’s contract, and hopes a longer-term deal will be forthcoming.
In-form Slater has been one of City‘s stand-out performers in what’s been a fine season for the Tigers, with the club moving to exercise their option on the deal that was due to expire this summer.
Jakirovic wants Slater, who made his 36th Championship appearance of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Millwall, to be tied down to a longer-term deal, and reward the 26-year-old for a stellar campaign and see off expected interest this summer.
Slater brought up a double century of appearances for City earlier in the season, capping a fine spell at the club that started with an initial loan deal from Sheffield United in 2021, which was later made permanent in a £50,000 deal in January 2022 following Acun Ilicali’s takeover.

Slater himself revealed talks over striking a long-term agreement had not yet started but hoped they would in due course, and his boss expects it to happen.
“I’m very pleased,” Jakirovic told Hull Live. “Reegsy deserves everything, he’s proved everything on the pitch, he’s our main player in midfield because he’s playing. He’s reliable because he’s there every game, 90 minutes. Every three days he’s playing, so it’s very good for us.”
Discussions have not yet taken place over rewarding Slater with a longer-term deal, as has happened in recent weeks with skipper Lewie Coyle, who penned a new contract until 2029 earlier this year.
Sporting director Jared Dublin told Hull Live recently that he expected conversations with Slater and his representatives to start in the near future, and Jakirovic is keen to see the midfielder tied down to a deal that would give both the Tigers and the player some long-term security. “Of course (I want him to sign a new deal), but this is negotiation, this is normal – with the agent, with himself and our club,” the Croatian head coach added.
