Hull’s riverside came alive today (Sunday, March 8), on International Women’s Day, as people of all ages and abilities came together for the annual Headscarf Hustle.
This 5K run-or-walk event along the Humber aimed to raise the profile of the campaign to build a statue in Hull honouring the Headscarf Revolutionaries – the remarkable Hull women who changed fishing safety forever. Led by Lillian Bilocca, alongside her fellow campaigners, these women stood up to injustice in the 1960s after the tragic loss of local fishermen.
Their determination forced vital safety reforms in the fishing industry, saving countless lives, and the annual Headscarf Hustle looks to give them permanent recognition for their actions.
Participants in the 5K, organised by Fitmums and Friends on behalf of the Headscarf Revolutionaries Statue Management Committee, were all given a headscarf to wear, being the unmistakable trademark of the original campaigners.
Each year, the headscarves are handmade by local volunteers, who come together one afternoon ahead of the event to create around 400 headscarves with care and pride. Adding to the excitement, a brand-new design is created for the event each year.
A guest at this year’s event was Jessie, one of the unforgettable faithfuls from the latest series of The Traitors, along with BBC Look North presenter Peter Levy, who was official starter of the event – wearing a headscarf, of course.
