Ninety years on from the Spitfire’s first flight on March 5, 1936, Hull Minster celebrated Britain’s most iconic aircraft.
A free event held in and around the Minster and Trinity Square enabled curious visitors to get up close with a model Spitfire MKII and to meet demonstrators and re-enactors – including Mr Churchill himself – in a day of nostalgia.
There was an opportunity to handle the gear used by soldiers and the home front during the war, including a full-scale Morrison shelter, and to relive the sounds of the 1940s with a series of musical performances, including a George Formby tribute, the Andrews Sisters, and a WWII pipe major.
Displays from local heritage groups commemorating the war in Hull added to the offering for families drawn to the Spitfire spectacle – have a browse through photographer Donna Clifford’s gallery of pictures below, taken at the event.
