A range of films will be coming to the big screen at the shopping centre
Cinema enthusiasts in Hull can now immerse themselves in a selection of independent film screenings at St Stephen’s shopping centre. Reel Cinema has teamed up with Hull Independent Cinema to make independent cinema accessible for the local community, bringing a range of international and English films to the big screen to the centre.
The partnership will allow visitors to enjoy a range of movies not available to watch at other mainstream cinemas. The collaboration, which launched in January, has already seen several successful showings at St Stephen’s, including completely sold-out screenings of Dragonfly and The Voice of Hind Rajab.
Upcoming showings include:
- The Chronology of Water – An adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s celebrated memoir which touches on themes of womanhood, survival, and art, showing on Saturday, March 7
- Twinless – Follows the relationship between two men who meet at a bereavement group for those who have lost a twin, as dark secrets and shocking revelations emerge, showing on Thursday, March 19.
Jim Harris, centre manager at St Stephen’s, said: “This is a really important and exciting partnership for St Stephen’s. Reel Cinema already brings together so many members of the community through the joy of the big screen and we’re happy to be able to extend this offering through the world of independent cinema.”
Ellis Atkinson-Selkirk, duty manager at St Stephen’s Reel Cinema, said: “We believe the cinema experience to be a broad and exciting spectrum, from larger blockbusters for all the family to enjoy to smaller scale independent films. That’s why we’re so pleased to be teaming up with Hull Independent Cinema to support the brilliant work they do and open the door to a whole other world of possibility for our local community.”
James Russell, trustee of Hull Independent Cinema, said: “We’re incredibly passionate about independent cinema as an organisation and are thrilled that St Stephen’s and Reel Cinema have welcomed us onboard, allowing us to bring a vast array of amazing films to the people of Hull.” To help visitors make the most of their trip to St Stephen’s, parking at the centre costs £1 from 5pm onwards, or free when visiting Reel Cinema and other selected restaurant and leisure destinations.
To take advantage of the special evening tariff, shoppers must enter the car park after 5pm and leave before midnight. Hull Independent Cinema is an entirely volunteer-run not-for-profit organisation which has been co-ordinating screenings of the best arthouse, world, independent, cult, classic, and short films in Hull since 2014.
During the February half-term holiday, St Stephen’s is offering a number of deals and offers to families, up until Sunday, February 22. They include discounted tickets at Reel Cinema and family deals at Laser Station, as well as a Prezzo meal deal when one child is able to enjoy a two-course meal for £1 for every adult meal purchased.
