Brisbane Broncos superstar Reece Walsh is hoping for a hostile Hull reception when he steps out at the MKM Stadium and is eager to witness the noise Hull KR fans can bring.
The 23-year-old has already had a taste of the sort of atmosphere English fans can generate, when starring for the Kangaroos in their recent Ashes series whitewash – with the crowd at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium having been praised previously.
A sold out MKM Stadium will be something different with east taking over west as Rovers fans descend on Hull FC ’s home for arguably the biggest game in the club’s history. After spending the week in Hull, Walsh will already know the fevered anticipation for the match, which the Brisbane players having some idea of what to expect when they step out for kick-off.
It’s one of the reasons Walsh is so excited for the game and he’s hoping KR and Super League fans bring the noise, then be ready to make friends afterwards.
“When I was over here last year with the Kangaroos I experienced how hostile it gets with the fans getting in to you, I love that,” explained Walsh.
“You have that, but you know when the game is finished the same people hang around and want an autograph or a photo with you, they show their respect. It’s about character and I enjoy being about that.
“It’s like us as player. When you cross that white line, it’s game time and you just want to win, but afterwards you shake hands and show your respect. You give the opposition some praise.”
Walsh has had praise this week for Hull KR head coach Willie Peters, the Rovers team and the experience of being in England for the World Club Challenge. He’s also been impressed with what he’s seen of the MKM Stadium so far.
“I’ve seen this stadium before from afar and seen games here and it looks pretty tight with the crowd on top of you,” added Walsh.
“Those are the sort of environments I like to be around. It’s going to be hostile and the boys love those sorts of environments, too.
“It takes me back to playing down at the local junior club against your rival team, when you’d have people banging on the fence and calling you all sorts of names and getting in to you. I’m excited and can’t wait to experience it.”
