Children from Hull nursery, Kids Planet Bricknell, came together to spread joy across their community in the lead-up to Random Acts of Kindness Day. The children gifted bouquets of flowers to local residents when they visited a bakery, a chemist and other nearby businesses.

Preschoolers from the Bricknell Avenue nursery learned about kindness and sharing, with children and staff taking on the joyful activity of giving away flowers in the lead-up to Random Acts of Kindness Day, celebrated on Tuesday, February 17. The day is about spreading positivity, fostering connections and proving that simple acts can brighten people’s days.

Children chose their own bouquet of flowers, learnt to pay for things, and visited local establishments such as a bakery, a chemist and other nearby businesses. The children also sent letters of appreciation to surrounding nurseries.

The gifts were hugely appreciated by the local community and every recipient sent thanks to the children – some even returned gifts for the children to take home. One child also came across a grandparent, who commented on how lovely it was to see their grandchild spreading positivity.

Children at Kids Planet are actively encouraged to explore, learn and interact with others. Practitioners at each nursery, including Bricknell, strive to create learning opportunities outside of the classroom, encouraging the children to share their ideas and support one another as a core part of their future development.

Charlotte Mowforth, nursery manager at Kids Planet Bricknell was touched by the response to the gifts and celebrates the importance of teaching kids about kindness in early years education. She said: “As a nursery manager, I truly believe that giving back to our community and teaching children about kindness is a huge part of our role in the early years.

“It’s not just about the activity itself. It’s about what children feel and learn from it.

“When they hand out flowers, make cards, visit local places or do something thoughtful for others, they begin to understand that their actions have meaning. They see smiles, they hear ‘thank you’, and they start to recognise how they can make someone’s day better.

“These experiences help children build empathy, confidence, and a real sense of belonging. That sense of community and care is something we really value at Kids Planet, and we’re proud to see it reflected in the children every day.”
