Northern Gas has ‘sincerely apologised for the disruption’ but said there is a possibility the closure will be extended

Three Hull City Councillors have raised concerns over an ongoing road closure on Anlaby Road. The closure, which is due to necessary gas works, is causing “unbearable” impact on local residents, the councillors have said.

Since January 5, a section of Anlaby Road has been closed, with traffic management measures in place. Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out work to replace ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes.

In a letter sent on Friday, January 16, councillors Maria Coward, Jack Haines, and Alison Collinson asked the gas distributor to “urgently review” the works and the corresponding traffic management arrangements. The councillors, each of the Boothferry ward, and representing the Liberal Democrats added that “many have simply described the situation as chaos.”

Cllr Coward told has said: “Myself, Cllr Jack Haines and Cllr Alison Collinson have written to the Chief Executive of Northern Gas about the road closures on Anlaby Road expressing the frustrations of residents and ourselves. Countless people have been in touch to complain about the delays caused by the roadworks and are looking forward to assurances that this will be completed on time.”

She added: “We’re demanding answers and solutions to the road closure that is causing a real issue on our roads.” Her colleague, Cllr Haines added: “We want Northern Gas to set out a clear plan of action to alleviate the pressure their works are putting on the roads.”

In response to the councillors’ concerns, NGN said: “We sincerely apologise for the disruption and appreciate the patience and understanding shown by the community during these essential gas main replacement works. The closure and all associated traffic management arrangements have been very carefully planned and coordinated with the council’s highways department to minimise inconvenience wherever possible.

“We understand the frustration caused by the congestion and the impact on daily routines. While we remain committed to removing the temporary traffic lights on schedule, due to unforeseen circumstances and engineering challenges, we are currently in discussions with the highways department about the possibility of extending the closure on Anlaby Road.

“We are doing everything we can to resolve these challenges swiftly. We appreciate the impact on the local area and are working closely with all parties involved to ensure the works are completed as quickly and safely as possible.”
