Sergej Jakirovic has done a brilliant job at Hull City and now looks set to be rewarded at the MKM Stadium
Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic has agreed a new three-year contract. The news comes a day after the Tigers earned a memorable 2-0 win over Manchester United.
Jakirovic’s side secured promotion to the Premier League last season after a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship Playoff final. That victory at Wembley Stadium in May secured top-flight football at the MKM Stadium for the first time since the 2014/15 campaign.
Hull have been tipped by many as favourites to go straight back down to English football’s second-tier after just one season back in the big time. But Saturday’s surprise win over United, who finished third last term, will give some observers food for thought.
And Hull Live understands that the Tigers’ Bosnian boss is set to sign a new contract. The 49-year-old arrived on Humberside on a two-year deal in June 2025.
Jakirovic succeeded Ruben Selles after Hull narrowly avoided relegation to League One in the 2024/25 campaign, staying up on goal difference. He became the fifth managerial appointment under the watch of chairman Acun Ilicali, who took over in January 2022.
The ex-Dinamo Zagreb manager has drawn praise after outsmarting United head coach Michael Carrick this weekend.
Jakirovic revealed the players and staff had a plan of attack for the Red Devils from set-pieces, and it worked a treat with both goals coming from a corner and a free-kick.
He said: “We tried something on Friday, so we had some plan there to try to punish them, how they’re standing, especially on the wide free kicks to make some blocks there, and then we saw Nobel and Semi score.”
On the performance as a whole, he added: “I’m feeling excellent, and I’m very happy because of how our players put everything on the pitch today.
“Everything that we agreed on in the meeting this week, everything that we tried to practice went as planned, and this is the result in the end. I’m very, very pleased with them.”
