Sweden’s World Cup star Elliot Stroud has finally completed his move to Hull City from Mjällby AIF, with the left-sided winger signing a four-year contract at the MKM Stadium with a 12-month option.

City had been working on a deal to sign the 24-year-old for well over a month, but have finally secured the arrival of the player who caught the eye at this summer’s World Cup, paying in the region of £3.5m including add-ons.

Born to a Swedish mother and English father, Stroud scored seven times and claimed two assists in 15 Allsvenskan games last term, and started the last-32 defeat against France in New Jersey as his country bowed out of the World Cup after an encouraging showing.

While talks remained ongoing with both clubs, Stroud continued to play for the Swedish side and helped them progress through the Champions League qualifying stages, financially helping the club.

His penalty just after the hour on Tuesday looked to have given Mjällby a vital first leg lead at home to Slovan Bratislava, before two late goals from the away side secured a precious away success.

“Because he’s a good player,” Jakirovic laughed when asked by Hull Live why he was so keen to sign the Swede. “He’s a player who has just played at the World Cup for his country.

“He’s a very good player; he’s very versatile. He can play left full-back, left wing-back, left winger, and he can play some games in the middle. He’s a runner, too, so I think he will suit us very well. He’s with us and will be in the squad against Nice on Saturday.”
