Aidan Sezer has outlined the tough nature of Hull FC’s season – and has aired his disappointment at ‘some things that have played out externally’ throughout the year.
The Black and Whites skipper is one of a handful of players who have seen their future at the club placed into doubt this summer, with the half-back reportedly offered to Super League clubs – one of which, the York Knights, has shown interest for 2027.
Sezer was also dropped for Hull’s game at Leigh at the end of May but has been ever-present since, standing tall to lead the side to victory at St Helens on Thursday night.
Handed the Man of the Match award by Sky Sports, Sezer spoke to the broadcaster post-match and made no secret of the challenges of the season so far, both on and off the field.
“I’m not going to shy away from it; it’s been tough at times,” Sezer said. “You’d like to think being a professional rugby league player, you narrow your focus and you turn up to train and play, but some things have played out externally and that’s been disappointing, but we’ve got a tight bunch of boys. I love these boys and I love the fanbase, and I love representing this club.
“I thought we really narrowed our focus this week on winning the ruck, completing, and not giving teams a leg up. Discipline played a big part. We’re just happy we got the two points.”
Sezer also confirmed he is all good on the injury front, having had treatment on his foot during the game. He added: “My foot is a bit sore but we got the win so I’ll feel alright.”
Meanwhile, interim coach Andy Last has praised Sezer for his role in victory at Saints and contributions this year, allowing Jake Arthur to take a lead half-back role and instead play more of a running game.
“He’s done a really good job for us,” Last told Hull Live. “He’s allowed Jake Arthur to take more of that lead ball-playing, that lead pivot role, and he’s a real strong runner of the football.
“When he gets the bit between his teeth and decides he wants to run the ball like he did tonight and in previous weeks, he’s a handful, and he’s a competitor. I think that’s one of Aidan’s biggest strengths; he’s a real competitor, and he takes a lot of pride in his performance and being part of a team that competes every week.
“Inside our four walls, he’s done a good job and he’s led by his actions on numerous occasions. He’s also a very vocal member of our team. He’s been good for us.”
