A former well-known East Yorkshire restaurant has been transformed into a new health and wellbeing spa. The Millhouse, in Beverley Road, Skidby, closed in 2024 after a fire caused smoke damage throughout the venue.
Though management initially indicated the restaurant and bar could reopen, it remained shut, closing the book on the popular eatery that had been welcoming diners for more than 30 years. It has now been given a new lease of life as the home of Nu Health following a £300,000 investment.
It offers a range of facilities including a medical aesthetics clinic, infrared sauna, plunge pool and hot tub, ice baths and an oxygen chamber. It has been launched by Amy Hills, who has an established reputation in the healthcare sector through her other businesses, including award-winning Kingswood Parks Dental & Skin Clinic and Nu Skn, which offers advanced skin rejuvenation and non-surgical aesthetic treatments and will now also be based at the spa.
Amy says the opening a high-quality spa has long been an ambition, offering treatments many people will sometimes travel out of the area to access. She said: “This has been a long-term vision and goal of mine and a natural progression from Nu Skn, with a focus on offering services and treatments which are clinically proven to bring major health benefits.
“I’d looked at potentially using the former Sessions Spa premises in Beverley but it wasn’t really the right space or layout, so I spoke to Paul White at Garness Jones and he suggested that I take a look at the Mill House.
“As soon as I walked into the grounds, I knew it was the perfect setting and building. It’s in a beautiful location with stunning views from the balcony.
“It’s needed extensive refurbishment but there were many stunning features that we have retained during the refurbishment. We’ve done it all in three months. Thankfully I have family involved in the building trade and good contacts, but it has been hectic and challenging to get to where we are today.”
Though memberships are required, day passes are available for all of the facilities and the on-site Detox Cafe is open to non-members. “We’re offering a place to help people relax, recover and feel their best,” Amy added. “We’ve made the prices very reasonable compared to what people pay when travelling further afield. We’ve had a fantastic initial response from people so I am really confident it will prove a huge success. It’s offering something new and different in the region.”
Members will also be able to get take part in Pilates classes and enjoy hydrotherapy and massage therapy in a setting which includes a dedicated relaxation and wellness suite, designed to help people “relax, recover and feel their best”.
Paul White, director of commercial property specialists Garness Jones, handled negotiations on the letting and said: “We were always confident this building would attract a lot of interest, especially as given the property fell under the Class E category, allowing easy change to a wide range of business activities. It attracted strong interest from a variety of potential occupiers, including medical practices, opticians, nurseries and office users, but we felt Amy’s ambitious vision for the property stood out from the outset.
“The transformation of the building has been exceptional, breathing new life into a well-known local landmark while preserving its important place within the community.
“Her investment and vision will ensure it has a sustainable future, creating a high-quality facility that will serve the area for many years to come. It demonstrates how collaboration, adaptability and investment can successfully regenerate prominent commercial buildings.
