A new Irish is days away from opening its doors to punters in Hull . . .and first drinks are on the house to mark the launch! Work has been going on behind the scenes for months to transform the building into Paddy Mangan’s – a warm, authentic Irish bar which is destined to welcome thousands for exciting nights of stouts, snacks and music.
The building in Bowlalley Lane in Hull city centre has undergone a £250,000 refurbishment and is poised and ready to bring entertainment seven nights a week, with live music, quizzes, big-screen sport and a proper welcome. The new venue will open on Friday, July 3, and to mark the opening customers will receive a drinks token on arrival, giving them their first drink for free.
The city centre bar is being launched by the team behind Molly Mangan’s on Newland Avenue, which opened in mid-December and has quickly built a strong following for its music, sport and busy weekend nights. Just like its sister venue, Paddy Mangan’s has been designed to bring the feel of a traditional Irish bar into the city centre, with the team paying attention to all the little details which obviously including the all important popular Irish stouts and whiskeys, Irish crisps, snacks and other touches to make the venue feel the part.
The team says Molly Mangan’s has already proven the huge demand in Hull for Irish bars that put atmosphere, music and sport at the heart of the experience. Since opening last year, people have travelled from across the city and beyond for its live music nights and matchday events, kindling the belief that Paddy Mangan’s will bring the same energy into Hull city centre.
Jack Mangan, co-owner of Paddy Mangan’s, said: “We’ve seen with Molly Mangan’s how much people in Hull love a proper Irish bar when it’s done right. It’s about the music, the sport, the welcome and the atmosphere. People have been coming to Molly’s from all over because they know they’re going to get a great night. We wanted to bring that same energy into the Old Town, but give Paddy Mangan’s its own identity.
“We’ve put a lot into the build to make the bar feel warm and authentic from the moment people walk in. The city centre needs more places with real atmosphere, and we think Paddy’s is going to bring exactly that. And because it’s opening night, the first drink is on us. There’ll be plenty of Guinness flowing, of course, but if that’s not your thing, we’ve got you covered. Bring your token to the bar, choose your drink and we’ll get the first round started.”
Live entertainment planned includes music and quizzes to special events. The programme will feature local favourites, including Hull’s Hillbilly Troupe and Kings O’ Blarney, alongside artists from across the country.
The opening weekend line-up boasts Irish and folk-influenced acoustic duo Nick Rooke & Paul Blackburn on Friday, Irish folk rock band The Counterfeit Celts on Saturday and Hull singer-songwriter Will Dooley on Sunday.
Danilo Swire, entertainment manager at Paddy Mangan’s, said: “Music is a massive part of what we do, but the bigger thing is making sure there’s always a reason to come in.
“Paddy Mangan’s gives us another stage for that. There’ll be something happening seven nights a week, whether that’s live music, a quiz night or another event, so even on a Tuesday or Wednesday the place feels alive.
“It’s about creating proper nights out, with the crowd involved and the whole bar feeling like something’s happening. That’s when it starts to feel like a real Irish bar.
“We’ve put the work into the Irish side of it. It’s not just a name above the door. There’ll be popular Irish stouts, a great range of Irish whiskeys, proper Irish snacks and all those little details that make it feel like the real deal.”
