John Cartwright has moved to clarify his social media comments after being accused of crossing a line by Hull FC interim head coach Andy Last.
A comment from Cartwright on LinkedIn has been widely shared on social media, with the former Hull boss insisting his son Jed Cartwright was fit and available for selection despite being left out by Last ahead of Friday’s game against Warrington Wolves.
Cartwright junior hasn’t featured for the Black and Whites since round three against York Knights when he picked up a hamstring injury.
The back-rower posted on social media this week to suggest he would be fit, before Last left him of the squad stating he wasn’t considered to be 100 per cent.
That’s when the Catalans Dragons boss posted on LinkedIn to dispute Last’s words.
“So just to be clear. Jed is 100 per cent fit to play this week,” Cartwright wrote. “Hasn’t been selected. Don’t mind that selections are never easy. Hopefully next week.”
Last hit back at Cartwright when that comment was put to him after the Warrington game on Friday night.
“There’s consideration for Jed to come back in,” Last said at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. “I don’t think John should be commenting on my team selections.
“I certainly won’t be commenting on his selections with Catalans. That’s a line he shouldn’t have crossed, but it is what it is.”
Now Cartwright, speaking after his side’s 40-16 loss to Wigan Warriors in Paris on Saturday night, has responded by explaining just why he felt the need to post.
“I think if you read the comment I didn’t talk about the team selection,” Cartwright told Hull Live. “I spoke to Jed earlier in the week and he made himself available to play, the staff made him available to play.
“I saw that they said he wasn’t fit, so I just thought that people need to know that he’s fit to play and he’s ready to go.”
Asked how he reflected on his Hull FC exit in April, Cartwright added: “I don’t want to talk about that, I’m here with Catalans.
“I really enjoyed my time at Hull, fantastic people, great staff. It didn’t end the way I wanted but I’m really thankful that Catalans have given me an opportunity between now and the end of the year and I intend to enjoy it and improve the side as best as we can.”
