Cabinet approves near £100m three‑year highways programme

  1. Hull City Council’s cabinet has approved a multi-year highways capital programme which includes schemes to maintain and improve a number of key routes across the city. The cabinet met on Monday, April 27, where they discussed and approved the programme.
  2. A report to the cabinet set out funding allocations for the next three financial years for schemes over £500,000. £38.7m is set out for 2026/27, whilst indicative figures are given for 2027/28 and 2028/29. Together the figures total £96.8m.
  3. The programme’s funding comes from the Government’s Department for Transport via the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority (HEYCA) and other bodies, such as Active Travel England, as well as the council’s own capital spend.
  4. During the cabinet meeting, the council’s portfolio holder for transport, Cllr Mark Ieronimo, described the programme as “ambitious”, adding it will “make it easier for people to travel confidently” and “upgrade the places where people feel most unsafe.”
  5. Some of Hull’s key routes such as Drypool Bridge, Freetown Way, and Calvert Lane, are included within the report. Funding is also allocated to the much-anticipated repair works to Chapman Street Bridge.
  6. Funding for Victoria Pier is also included in the programme. Around £4.5m is allocated to the pier, mostly in the 2027/28 financial year. The council has launched a consultation on the pier, with options for how a new structure on the site could look.
