A west Hull pub has ushered in a new era following an extensive £290,000 investment that has seen the venue relaunched as a ‘Grandstand’ sports venue. Willerby Road pub The Highway reopened its doors this week following a transformation designed to rival the atmosphere of a live stadium.

To celebrate the occasion, Luke Mellor was invited as the guest of honour to pull the first pint. Luke, a regular face at the pub’s quiz and pool nights with his wife, is the founder of Beyond The Brave, a men’s mental health group that provides a safe space for men to talk, listen, and support one another. The Highway will also now serve as the official home for the group, providing free access to its function room every Wednesday starting from April 1.

The pub is further cementing its commitment to Luke’s cause by hosting a race night fundraiser hosted by quiz master John Williams. The event aims to raise vital funds for promotional materials like banners and beer mats to help grow the group’s reach.

This community focus was a main reason operator Marston’s selected the site for a Grandstand makeover. The refurbishment includes the installation of a massive three-metre-long screen, a state-of-the-art sound system, and flexible seating.

Outside, guests can enjoy new outdoor bars with screens and use the Marston’s ‘Order & Pay’ app to ensure they never miss a moment of the action while ordering from their tables. Beyond the technology, the pub’s interior has been curated with local sports memorabilia, and management is currently seeking more photographs and merchandise from the public to celebrate the achievements of Hull’s sporting stars.

Whether it’s football, rugby, F1, or darts, the venue says it is committed to showing every major fixture. For those who prefer to play rather than watch, new regulation dart boards and pub games have been introduced, alongside upcoming competition leagues.

The food and drink offering has also received an update, featuring a ‘Match Day Menu’ with sharing plates like chicken wings and nachos, alongside draught beer available in two-pint cups. There will also be the chance for local sports teams to get their hands on a ‘Black Card’, securing them endless chips when they visit for team drinks, and even more rewards if they win their game.

The redesign aims to balance high-octane sports viewing with a welcoming environment for all types of visitors. Joanne Fieldsend, pub partner, said: “From new screens and menus to involving the local community, we’re passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome – whether they’re here for the match, a family meal, or to celebrate with their team after the final whistle.”
