It has been called a ‘lifeline’ for residents in the Sutton ward

A petition hoping to save a Lloyds Bank branch in Hull has been launched. The bank has announced its Ings Road branch is set to close on June 15.

Last month, Liberal Democrat Cllr Jonathan Cahill wrote to Lloyds Bank’s Chief Executive, asking for the decision to close the branch to be revisited. The Sutton ward councillor warned the closure would particularly impact older customers and people with disabilities.

He wrote: “While I recognise the ongoing shift towards digital banking, it is clear that not everyone is able to make that transition easily. A significant number of my constituents are either digitally excluded or lack confidence in online banking. Others depend on face-to-face services for more complex matters that cannot easily be resolved through an app, over the phone, or via a Post Office counter.

“I would warmly welcome you to visit this branch to see how vital it is for the community. I look forward to addressing these concerns of residents with you and outlining what support will be provided to affected customers.”

With the branch still set to shut in June, the Hull Lib Dems have now launched a petition to save the branch. On the new petition, Cllr Cahill added: “For many residents in Sutton ward, it is a lifeline. Closing it would force people to travel further for basic banking services and risk leaving elderly and vulnerable residents without the support they rely on.

“Lloyds needs to listen to the people in our community. They need to understand the impact this will have on so many people and businesses. We have started this petition to make the big bankers see how devastating this will be. I’d urge everyone to sign and share this petition.”

Responding to the petition being launched, Lloyds reaffirmed its plan to close the branch on June 15. A spokesperson from the bank added: “We’re supporting our customers in Sutton ward with a range of options for everyday banking in the community. Our customers can visit our local community banker in the nearby Banking Hub, for face to face support, as well as the Post Office for their everyday banking.

“They can also deposit cash at over 28,000 PayPoint locations, as well as accessing our app, online and phone services. When we close a branch, we give direct, bespoke support to vulnerable customers, based on their individual circumstances.”
