The busy Hull road was closed for several hours after Luke Edgar repeatedly stabbed the victim
A man used a potato peeler to stab an associate repeatedly – despite telling him they were going to have “a fair fight”. The injured man suffered a collapsed lung and needed three blood transfusions following the attack on Holderness Road, east Hull.
The road was closed for several hours while a forensic examination of the scene was undertaken by Humberside Police, who attended shortly after midnight when the violence broke out. Luke Edgar, 40, formerly of Royal Mews, off Anlaby Road, west Hull, admitted offences of wounding the man and possessing amphetamine on September 25 last year.
Grimsby Crown Court heard that both men were known to each other. The violence flared near a petrol station when Edgar spotted his associate and challenged him to a fight.
He said that it would be a fair fight but he drew out a potato peeler and began stabbing at his 25-year-old victim. The violence was captured on CCTV.
Edgar left the scene, leaving behind his victim, who suffered stab wounds to his armpit, spine, a collapsed lung and cuts to his cheek, ear and back. The victim was in hospital for nearly two weeks before being discharged.
Edgar had convictions for 50 previous offences. Rachel Scott, mitigating, said that Edgar would benefit from a drug rehabilitation programme. “He needs to stay clean,” said Miss Scott. “When he is clean, he does not offend.”
Recorder Mark McKone KC said that Edgar had suggested that he and his victim have a “fair fight”. “But you took a potato peeler to that fight,” said Recorder McKone. “Your record suggests you are someone who turns to crime and violence when it suits you.”
Edgar had been in custody for nearly six months. “I am giving you an opportunity to take the help on offer for your drug use,” said Recorder McKone. “Prove to people you can stick to it.”
Edgar was given a 19-month suspended prison sentence, 15 days’ rehabilitation, a six-month drug rehabilitation programme and a six-month 7pm to 5am curfew.
