The highly-rated defender has caught the eye throughout the Championship season

Charlie Hughes says he would welcome the chance to have discussions with Hull City bosses about signing a new contract at the MKM Stadium.

City snapped up the highly-rated defender from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2024 when he signed a four-year contract, with the club holding the option of a further 12 months.

While the 22-year-old remains under contract effectively until 2029, sporting director Jared Dublin suggested recently in conversation with Hull Live that Hughes was one of the players the club were considering rewarding for what’s been a fine season so far.

Hughes was the subject of strong interest from Coventry City last summer, with Tigers owner Acun Ilicali rejecting a £12m bid from the Sky Blues, and while there was interest during the January transfer window, nothing came to pass.

Interest will likely arrive again this summer, irrespective of what league the Tigers find themselves in, and Hughes will surely have a big decision to make.

For now, though, the powerful defender is focused on the job in hand, though he would be open to staying at a club he’s built a strong affinity for over the past 18 months or so.

“That’d be such a proud moment for me,” Hughes told Hull Live. “I love this club, I love playing for this club, love the fans’ club, the staff, players, and I’m really, really happy at the moment playing for this club, so yes, whatever (comes will be good).

“I’ve not heard them chats. As any player would, you just keep your head down, keep playing, and I’m just happy, cracking on with this team, this group.

“I’m the first to hear them chats (with Jared Dublin), so I’m not aware of that. I don’t listen to any other noise. I just take it game by game, crack on, and just play football. One hundred per cent,” he said when asked if he’d welcome a conversation about extending his deal.

Hughes’ first season at City last term was a real struggle, but 12 months on from the battle against relegation, he says there’s a real enjoyment about his work, wherever he plays across a defence that has suffered its fair share of injury troubles.

“Any position across the back five, I don’t mind playing as long as I’m playing,” he continued. “I’m really loving playing for this club, the fans, the club, the players, the staff. I’m loving everything about living here as well. I’m enjoying it. I’m really having fun playing for this club, and I think it plays a big part.

“In the position we were last year, no one can say you’re having fun when you’re down at the bottom, fighting for relegation and trying to stay in the league, that’s not fun for anyone, whereas you can enjoy moments when you’re putting points on the board. I think that’s down to the dressing room and the staff, the club, the fans. It’s really enjoyable.”
