James Poole will debut his own brand of sound at Creamfields Festival this summer

A former South Hunsley School pupil’s love of making music takes him on travels all over the globe. Musician, producer and DJ James Poole gets regular radio play; hundreds of thousands of listeners stream his music and he jets off to places around the world – sometimes at a moment’s notice – to share his sounds with live audiences.

James recently announced that he is debuting at Creamfields Festival, the world’s leading dance music festival, this August. It is marking its 20th year at Daresbury, Cheshire, and 80,000 festivalgoers will be expecting the biggest names in electronic music with the stellar line-up that includes James.

But first, he will be winging his way to LA, New York and Miami to shows. James is also planning a “hometown” show in Hull some time in 2026.

James said: “My music’s grown out of the Hull music scene in venues such as Welly, Atik, Kings, Old School House and Gate 5. There was all that electronic, house music as I was growing up in the city.”

Now creating his own music, and remixes for other artists, it means James, of Brough, finds himself playing at venues across the city where he was first introduced to the genre. Equally, he could be gigging anywhere from Ibiza to Ecuador.

“I’ve had regular appearances on BBC Radio One and Capital Dance,” said James. “I’ve got 220,000-plus monthly listeners on Spotify and at Beatport, the marketplace for DJs, I’ve had a number one with my track Temptation.”

Beatport described James as an artist “already rapidly establishing himself as a name that will be leading the way within the next generation of talent”. It said: “He is tipped to break cyclical trends within the world of house music; taking inspiration from a plethora of old-school records and seeking ways to revolutionise the stereotypical dance track.

“The UK artist boasts a bustling discography of ear candy alongside an incessantly expanding artillery of unreleased hits, making it no surprise that his productions are consistently supported by multiple industry heavyweights, the most notable including pioneers Skream & Jamie Jones.

“The support from Jamie landed him his debut Hot Creations release – the Beatport chart topping Miss Tony EP – as well as two infectious EPs on his Hottrax imprint.” James releases on house music labels such as Defected & Hot Creations, alongside creating remixes for successful electronic artists, including Manchester’s Josh Baker.

He had a surreal moment last November when he discovered a clip was doing the rounds of a DJ in Sao Paulo playing one of James’s songs. “There’s this DJ and he’s dancing to my song in Brazil and I’m sitting there, refreshing my phone in Brough, not able to quite believe it.

“I started all this when I was 19 and I’m 27 now,” said James. “I’d love to inspire other young artists to realise that things like this are possible – this all started for me in my bedroom.

“I’ve been full-time with it for two or three years now. It used to be something I balanced alongside uni [he studied business management with marketing at Leeds] and part-time jobs.

“I’d eventually love to set up my own label but at the moment I’m enjoying where I’m at. I am very much about living in the present.”
