The Tigers were beaten 2-1 thanks to two goals inside seven minutes at St James’ Park
Everything you need to know on Hull City’s game at Newcastle United
- Hull City went down to a first loss of the season in the Premier League with a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle united at St James’ Park.
- As expected, Lucas Herrington replace Senegal international Nobel Mendy, who was missing with concussion. The 19-year-old made his first Premier League start. The only other change came on the left wing with Sorba Thomas selected ahead of Elliot Stroud.
- As they did against Chelsea, City went behind early in the game. This time it took their hosts only three minutes, with Joe Willock scoring after his initial shot was blocked by John Egan, but the ball was not cleared.
- The game was only seven minutes old when the Tigers found themselves two goals down. Lewis Hall won the ball from Oli McBurnie, then after swapping passes with Harvey Barnes he puts the ball in the far corner to make it a great start for the hosts.
- City almost equalised on 15 minutes when Newcastle keeper Lukas Hornicek had something of a howler, gifting the ball to Mo Belloumi, but last week’s double goal scorer couldn’t react in time to score.
- The Tigers could have been three goals down at half-time but had to Konstantinos Tzolakis to thank for his penalty save after Sorba Thomas was penalised for slipping and grabbing the ankle of Jacob Murphy. Yoane Wissa then saw his shot saved brilliantly by Tzolakis.
- Jakirovic made a change at half-time with Tim Iroegbunam coming on for Matt Crooks.
- The second change came on 63 minutes with Mohamed-Ali Cho replacing Thomas. Just three minutes later the new arrival was on the scoresheet after being fed by Belloumi, making no mistake to get his side back in it.
- McBurnie, has a shot blocked and then Iroegbunam’s effort went just over the bar as City pressed for a late equaliser with their hosts hanging on but a second goal wouldn’t come.
- City had 44% of possession, but had more shots in the match with 21 to their opponents 11, but only 4 of those were on target.
- The result sees the Tigers drop to seventh in the table ahead of the rest of the teams playing this weekend.
