Steve Wood has been a volunteer with the RNLI at Flamborough since 2016

An RNLI volunteer with a decade of service under his belt has launched the lifeboat for the last time in Flamborough – but will still be part of the crew by manning the shop. Steve Wood retired from operational service on Sunday after 10 dedicated years.

Steve joined Flamborough RNLI in February 2016 and during his time at the station has served as head launcher, tractor driver and shore crew. On Saturday 12 September, he launched Forever Yibba as part of a kayak rescue, carrying out one final launch with the Flamborough RNLI. On Sunday, he recovered the lifeboat for the last time.

Steve said: “It has been a real privilege to be part of the Flamborough RNLI family over the years. I’ve made some great friends, shared some unforgettable experiences and I’m proud to have played my part in helping others. Although I’m stepping away from operational service, I’m pleased that Kim and I can continue supporting the station through the lifeboat shop.”

In a post on Facebook, the station acknowledged Steve’s dedicated service and said it was looking forward to seeing him and wife Kim around the shop, as the pair continue to volunteer. The post said: “The station would like to thank Steve for his incredible commitment, dedication, teamwork and the many hours he has given to Flamborough RNLI and the people who rely on its crews.

“Although Steve has retired from operational service, we’re delighted that Steve and his wife Kim will continue to support Flamborough RNLI, regularly volunteering at the lifeboat shop at South Landing. Steve, from everyone at Flamborough RNLI — thank you for everything you have done over the years. Your contribution, friendship and dedication will never be forgotten. We wish you all the very best for the future, Steve and we look forward to seeing you and Kim around the station and lifeboat shop for many years to come.”
