If approved, the plans would breathe new life into the derelict golf course and create new jobs

An East Yorkshire golf course is set to be transformed with a host of new leisure facilities including holiday lodges, a new clubhouse and padel courts. The Cherry Burton Golf Club near Beverley hasn’t been used in more than seven years, ever since its former owners ceased trading in 2018.
It was acquired by Aureus Leisure – owners of The Hawthorns Holiday Park in Bridlington – in 2020, sparking hopes that it would reopen the site. The new owners initially planned to build a number of holiday lodges on the site, but those proposals were withdrawn last summer.
Now grand plans have emerged to transform the site with a revamped golf course, fitness centre, holiday lodges and padel courts. A planning document submitted for Aureus by the Wildblood Macdonald consultancy reveals: “The client is exploring options to ensure the long term viability of the site by bringing additional revenue streams to the site to ensure the golf course remains in active use. The proposed wider range of sporting facilities to be offered will bring a greater number of users to the site and increase the social opportunities that the buildings can provide to the local community.”

Aureus Leisure Ltd has submitted a planning application to East Riding of Yorkshire Council which seeks the approval of a change of use at the 8.55-acre site, to include 35 holiday accommodation units in the form of lodge-style static caravans. The existing clubhouse would also be extended and refurbished to accommodate bar and restaurant facilities, including a new terrace “providing a social function and recreational facility”.
The proposals say: “While the golf club house remains a focal point for golfers, it also provides bar and restaurant facilities for users of the padel courts, fitness centre and holiday accommodation. Being open to the public, it will also be accessible to walkers on the Hudson Way.”
Meanwhile, the existing timber clad driving range shed is to be upgraded to provide fitness facilities at the site. The padel courts are proposed to be located on the grassed areas to the south west of the club house and fitness centre buildings.
The proposals have been backed by the Inward Investment team at East Riding of Yorkshire of Council. A note of support has been submitted as part of the plans, adding: “The application is supported from an Economic Development perspective.
“The proposal represents a significant opportunity to secure private sector investment in an established leisure asset which has remained closed as a golf facility since 2018. The scheme would bring the site back into active use through the re-opening of the golf course and the provision of 35 holiday lodges alongside a wider leisure offer including a fitness centre, padel facilities and children’s playground.
“The development would provide a broad range of leisure facilities and has the potential to generate wider economic benefits through visitor expenditure within the local area. The proposal would also create 11 full-time equivalent jobs, providing a positive direct employment benefit to the local economy.”
