On Friday, July 31 2026, Hull funeral director Robert Bush was jailed for 20 years.
The 48-year-old left bodies to decompose at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors’ premises in the city, gave bereaved families the ashes of other people and stole money donated from collections at funerals.The “horror” and revulsion felt by the families who had lost loved ones was revealed at Hull Crown Court during a series of powerful and harrowing victim statements during the first four days of the five-day sentencing hearing.
Over the coming weeks, we will be publishing those statements – from families who had cruelly been taken advantage of when they were at their most vulnerable. Their stories need to be told, and we will ensure that they are, for as long as it takes.
My father Albert Owst passed away on 15th November 2019. The funeral went ahead on 27th November 2019 at Chanterlands Avenue Crematorium.
We collected Dad’s ashes in a white pot urn with the ashes loose inside. There were no labels on the urn or certificate.
In December 2019 I had jewellery made for my mum which was a necklace which contained some of my father’s ashes and I had had a ring made for me which also contained some of my father’s ashes inside for my 50th birthday. In March 2024 I was on the bus passing Anlaby Road when I saw the police in attendance at Legacy Funeral Directors.
I was later informed by the police that they were in possession of ashes in the name of my father Albert Owst. This whole situation has affected us as a family and has caused so much distress.
We have only just got dad/grandad back even though he died five years ago. For five years I thought I was wearing jewellery that contained dad’s ashes. We have wasted hundreds of pounds on this jewellery.
