On Friday, July 31 2026, Hull funeral director Robert Bush was jailed for 20 years.
The 48-year-old left bodies to decompose at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors’ premises in the city, gave bereaved families the ashes of other people and stole money donated from collections at funerals.The “horror” and revulsion felt by the families who had lost loved ones was revealed at Hull Crown Court during a series of powerful and harrowing victim statements during the first four days of the five-day sentencing hearing.
Over the coming weeks, we will be publishing those statements – from families who had cruelly been taken advantage of when they were at their most vulnerable. Their stories need to be told, and we will ensure that they are, for as long as it takes.
I am the daughter of Terence White.
My dad was found in Legacy Funeral Home in March 2024, he’d passed away on Christmas Eve 2023 and had been cremated on 10th January 2024. Or so we thought.
We were given ashes to take home, alongside Dad’s wedding ring. We talked to them, we cared for them, we treated them as though they were dad and he was still with us. On dad’s birthday we lit candles around his ashes and celebrated his life.
The following day we had a knock from the police to say that they thought that dad had been found at Legacy. There we were celebrating his life and all the time he was in a store room with others, all dignity and respect taken away from him. Dad was such a lovely man and Rob Bush treated him like a piece of meat.
The second funeral was devastating. No one ever expects to bury their loved one twice. It haunts everything I do.
I’ve struggled with all the police contact, having had no involvement with the police before this happened. Robert Bush has caused this huge impact on my life. I feel only anger, hatred and disgust for the man that I trusted to treat my dad with dignity and respect.
He has absolutely broken me. What about when I have to arrange another funeral in the future? How will I trust anyone again? He knew exactly what he was doing. He stripped all dignity from our loved ones and for what? Money? He disgusts me.
