The Las Palmas-born right-footed winger has emerged as one of Acun Ilicali’s primary summer targets

It’s a sign of Hull City‘s ambition and determination that they are even being considered in the race to sign for Yeremay Hernandez, the Deportivo La Coruna starlet.
Hernandez is viewed as one of the brightest talents in Spain, and at the age of 23 could have his pick of some top European clubs, and may still if he does end up leaving Deportivo.
Borussia Dortmund and Sporting Lisbon are two such clubs that have held discussions with La Coruna this summer, but they want to keep their winger at the Riazor after he played a huge part in winning promotion and returning the former La Liga winners to the top flight last season, after dropping down the leagues in Spain following significant financial troubles.
His 11 goals and 10 assists in 38 league games in the Segunda Division were not a one-off, either. In the season before he netted 15 goals and five assists in 39 appearances, highlighting his consistency and, crucially, durability.
Known for his dribbling, his low centre of gravity and ability to take a player on, Hernandez has caught the eye and now he looks like getting a big-money move.
Naturally, there has been talk of a switch to the big two, Barcelona and Real Madrid. He’s even spoken about having the dream of playing for one of those two giants, but for now, he has the chance to join Hull City and embark on a Premier League career with the Tigers.
Conversations have been held, and it’s become apparent that he is keen on a move to the MKM Stadium, and understandably, that might surprise one or two, given City are not one of the Premier League’s fashionable few.
Sergej Jakirovic was clear in comments during his BBC Radio Humberside conversation, suggesting the youngster wanted to move to City. That hasn’t just happened overnight; that’s the result of a serious amount of work over a period of time to convince the player why East Yorkshire should be his next destination.

If they can come to an arrangement with Deportivo, it would be a huge financial outlay for the club. They’ve already smashed their record transfer fee twice this summer, with Konstantinos Tzolakis and then Nobel Mendy arriving for more than £40m combined, and if Hernandez was to join, City would need to find more than £30m to make it happen, you would think.
Given the financial muscle of Sporting and the lure of playing in Lisbon for a club that is European royalty, City may yet miss out on Hernandez, but it won’t be for the want of trying and being genuine contenders, and that should encourage supporters that the club do have the ability to scout really talented players and bring them in.
Yes, they may miss out, and some, understandably, will question why so much time was invested into a player that ultimately went elsewhere, but that’s the transfer window. A huge amount of work can go into some deals, and they don’t come off, that’s the nature of the industry the club are working in.
The Tigers have to sign good players to be competitive, and they’ve shown signs of that happening so far, but more are needed, especially when it comes to creating. They need something different in attack, and Hernandez would be that, in addition to the likes of Mo Belloumi, who has something a little different. Relegated teams always struggle to create and take chances.
It would be a huge outlay for a club just up from the Championship, and there would be pressure on him to deliver at a level he’s never delivered at before; however, there’s clearly a special type of talent there, and one that could unlock a path to survival for City.
If they can pull it off, it would be the cherry on top of what could yet be a really positive transfer window for City by the time 11 pm on September 1 arrives, even if it’s not been without its problems and difficulties.
