Hull FC have signed Leigh Leopards forward Isaac Liu, as first reported by Love Rugby League. The 35-year-old has committed to a 12-month deal, joining incoming head coach Steve McNamara’s squad for the 2027 season.
Liu is a player well-known to McNamara, having made his Sydney Roosters debut in the same year that the Hull-born coach joined the club as one of Trent Robinson’s assistants. The Roosters won the NRL Premiership that year, with the player going on to taste Grand Final success again in 2018 and 2019.
In total, Liu, a former New Zealand international, spent eight years at Bondi Junction before joining Gold Coast Titans, where he played for another three seasons. He has over 270 NRL games to his name and has spent the last two seasons with the Leopards after arriving in Super League ahead of 2025.
Out of contract at the end of the season, Leigh head coach Adrian Lam made no secret that the club were in talks to re-sign Liu. However, Hull have now agreed to a move that will see him reunited with McNamara ahead of pre-season training in November.
Looking to bolster the pack, Liu, at home at prop or loose forward, will be tasked to help Hull dominate the middle of the field and gain the necessary ruck control to win Super League games – an area where they have largely fallen short this year. He is regarded as a strong ball carrier with a solid work rate and has the experience and leadership sought after a long career to help raise standards throughout the club.
Crucially, Liu has also proved to be a durable player at Leigh, playing 56 games in two years to date and just missing the one game this season. And for a club whose injury woes have been widely documented, this bodes well for the future, regardless of the fact he turns 36 in April.
Lui is expected to be one of several new recruits for next season. The club have also acquired Bailey Hodgson and Alrix Da Costa and are hoping to sign Australian centre Jordan Swann. They have also recently been linked with a move for NRL half-back Daly Cherry-Evans.
