Hull KR claimed an eighth Hull derby win in a row as they beat Hull FC 26-12 at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The Robins were down on numbers at Magic Weekend with key men missing, but they ground it over their bitter rivals to take the bragging rights once more with four Merseyside tries.
Efforts came from Mikey Lewis, Rhyse Martin, Jai Whitbread and Tyrone May on the day and that was enough to cancel out the spirited efforts of Andy Last’s Black and Whites, who will feel as though they had the Robins on the ropes in the second half before they eventually bowed.
It’s a win Rovers so desperately needed to keep themselves in the play-off picture after the loss to Leeds last weekend. Hull are making strides but they’ll have to be better to pick up the points they need against York Knights next week.
It was the red and white of Hull KR who settled in faster on the blue side of Merseyside and they had an early chance to get over the line through Tom Davies, but with the try line begging, he couldn’t take the ball in.
Sauaso Sue saw an effort ruled out for obstruction before Tom Briscoe had an effort ruled out after a first spell of Hull of possession.
It wasn’t too long before the Robins managed to make their early dominance count on the scoreboard though, with Lewis touching down in the corner.
The stand-off hung a kick up to the corner and he was on hand to collect Jack Broadbent’s pat back to finish unopposed in the corner.
Willie Peters’ side doubled their advantage through Martin, with the back-rower, in his final year as a player, hitting the short pass from Lewis and running a fine line power through the attempted challenge of Davy Litten to finish.
Hull grew into the game as the first half wore on and after some sloppy discipline from KR, they worked their way up the field to touch down through Jake Arthur.
Martin had the last say on the half, slotting a penalty from 40 metres out.
It was Hull who came out swinging in the second half, though, and with Andy Last’s words ringing in their ears they pulled the game to within two points.
This time Arthur was the provider, finding Briscoe in space on the line with a precise, looping ball over the top.
Hull kept their foot on the gas and without numbers in the pack, Rovers struggled to find the answers, inviting pressure on themselves and doing plenty of defending on their own try line.
Zak Hardaker levelled the scores from the boot and the Hull fans behind the sticks will have been dreaming of a first win over their rivals in three years.
But their hearts were broken when a loose carry from Lewis Martin in front of his own posts presented Whitbread with the opportunity to burst through and score.
And with around six minutes to go, the Robins made sure of it, with Jez Litten’s grubber through the line being touched down by May and there was still time for Martin to wrap things up with another penalty.
