Due to the closure of a Morrisons Local, Bricknell Ward in Hull will soon have no Post Office counter service

A Hull MP has co-launched a petition to save a local Post Office in West Hull. Due to the upcoming closure of the Morrisons Local it is based in, the Post Office branch at Fairfax Avenue is due to close on August 9.
Dame Diana Johnson (Labour – Hull North and Cottingham ) has co-launched a petition with Bricknell Ward Cllr Sharon Hofman ( Labour ) to urge the Post Office to find another site in the ward. A Post Office spokesperson has said it recognises the inconvenience that will be caused by the Fairfax Avenue branch’s future closure and and it has advertised the branch vacancy.
Interested parties have until July 10 to come forward, though this window may close sooner, if sufficient interest is registered. The closure of the Morrisons Daily store is part of a wider downscaling of the supermarket giant’s small convenience stores.
Dame Diana has stated in social media posts highlighting the petition, “Bricknell residents face losing Post Office counter services in the ward when Morrisons in Fairfax Avenue closes in August.” She stated she had launched the petition with Cllr Hofman “urging Post Office Ltd to secure another site in the ward for Post Office services”.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “Our retail partner has reviewed their Morrisons Daily store operations and has decided to close their store at Fairfax Avenue. Consequently, the Post Office branch at this location will close on Sunday 9 August.”
“We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause our customers and small businesses who rely on our banking and parcel services in particular. We have now advertised the vacancy for the branch on our runapostoffice.co.uk website.
“We welcome applications from nearby retailers looking to host a Post Office inside their store.” The appeal for interested commercial partners, viewable here, has been shared by Dame Diana too.

The Post Office advised of the two nearest alternative branches to the Fairfax Avenue one. These are:
- Chanterlands Post Office, 197 Chanterlands Avenue, Hull, HU5 3TT – 1.1 miles away.
- Inglemire Post Office, Go Local, 113-115 Inglemire Lane, Hull, HU6 7TR – 1.2 miles away.
Posting about the petition, on Saturday, June 27, Dame Diana stated she had been collecting signatures in person that day as well. Morrisons announced in May it would close 100 Morrisons Daily stores as part of a new restructuring drive.
At the beginning of this month, the locations of seven Morrisons stores closing across Yorkshire and North Yorkshire were announced. This included the Fairfax Avenue store.
The Morrisons Daily in Middle Street South, Driffield, is also due to be closed. In 2022, Morrisons took over numerous McColl’s sites and by 2024 converted 132 corner shops into Morrisons Daily stores to try to rescue such locations from closure.
The Driffield and Fairfax Avenue stores both used to be under the ownership of McColl’s. Despite the intended closures, Morrisons will continue to have over 1,500 Morrisons Daily branches throughout the UK.
