Scott Taylor will return to Hull FC as an assistant coach for the 2027 season and beyond.
Hull Live understands that the former player, a club legend at the Black and Whites, has agreed a deal to be part of incoming head coach Steve McNamara’s backroom staff for next season, capping a swift return to his boyhood outfit.
Retiring from professional rugby league at the end of the 2023 season, Taylor has coached at Championship outfit Goole Vikings for the last two seasons and is out of contract at the East Yorkshire club at the end of the year.
The 35-year-old, who learned his craft in the amateur game with Beverley A.R.L.F.C. before joining Goole, spoke on All Out Rugby League’s Back 10 podcast this week regarding his desire to step up to Super League as an assistant coach, and it’s our understanding he will link up with Hull ahead of pre-season training this autumn.
Taylor will work under McNamara alongside fellow Hull-born coach Andy Last, currently in an interim head coach spell, with the trio all former players at the club – Last debuting in 1999 and McNamara ten years prior in 1989. Simon Grix is also contracted for the 2027 season, having signed a two-year extension at the start of last year.
Of course, Taylor, who joined Hull ahead of the 2016 season, won two Challenge Cups as a player in an eight year stint at his hometown club. He played 178 times for the Black and Whites before hanging up his playing boots the end of the 2023 season.
He also played for Wigan Warriors, winning the 2013 Challenge Cup and Super League trophies and had stints at Hull KR and Salford Red Devils. He featured internationally with England, totalling over 300 career appearances.
Taylor’s return to Hull is the club’s first backroom appointment ahead of the McNamara era, with Hull expected to bring in more additions to maximise performance under their new head coach.
