The Swiss Cottage has been described as a “time warp” but has earned rave reviews from customers

A longstanding Hornsea restaurant is up for sale promising an “excellent opportunity” for a budding restaurateur in the seaside town. The Swiss Cottage was originally opened in the 1960s and has been under the same ownership since 2008.

Now its proprietors hope to retire, with the distinctive looking New Road business hitting the market with a near £390,000 asking price. Potential buyers have the chance to take on the 60 cover venue which offers classics such as fillet steak, lamb shank and salmon in watercress sauce, along with a host of starters including soups, smoked salmon and battered stuffed mushrooms.

The restaurant and bar and is currently open seven days per week, but agents Cogogo, who are marketing the business, say there is scope to increase its circa £100,00 per year turnover by extending the opening hours, which are currently to suit the owners. They suggest a “modest” marketing effort and a new website with online booking facilities could help the Swiss Cottage attract even more customers under new ownership.

A restaurant area hosts 30 covers, while the licensed bar seats another 32 along with standing areas. The property also comes with three-bedroom accommodation on the first floor, which features a balcony terrace and could be used by new owners or let out to generate further income.

In its listing, Cogogo said: “The business has built up an enviable reputation within the area for the high quality of the goods and services offered, which has resulted in a very loyal client base, with a high volume of repeat trade and word of mouth recommendations. The restaurant and bar boasts excellent reviews on the popular travel website Trip Advisor.

“This is an excellent opportunity for a new owner, perhaps a husband and wife team or partnership, to take this already thriving business to the next level; therefore early viewing must come highly recommended to avoid disappointment.”

The Swiss Cottage has earned a number of rave reviews from recent customers, including one who visited this month and despite pointing to the “time warp” decor, said: “We’ve been visiting Swiss Cottage for quite some time now and it genuinely remains one of the main reasons we keep coming back to Hornsea. The food is always excellent, consistently fresh, tasty and well presented, but what really makes this place stand out is the atmosphere and the people.

“The staff are always warm, friendly and incredibly accommodating. Nothing ever feels too much trouble, and they’ve always made us feel welcome as a family. They are especially good with our children, including one who is neurodiverse and can sometimes be a little challenging in busy environments. We’ve never once been made to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome — quite the opposite in fact. Their patience, kindness and understanding genuinely mean a lot to us.”
