There is an atmosphere of excitement in Old Town as the latest ‘Hullywood’ production starts to take shape. The cobbled streets and red bricks of Hull will once again set the scene, dressed up with props and temporary structures.
Road closure signs stated the High Street would be closed to traffic on May 14th and 15th, followed by closures from 8am on 18th May until 6pm on 22nd May.
The film is believed to be a period horror which is shooting between May 19th to 21st. Last month, Alessi Hartigan Casting UK issued casting call for extras from Hull to play the parts of “lower class passer-by – 1800s period”.
Props being installed include an array of wooden signs advertising a “shave for a penny”, “pipes and cigars”, “high class artificial teeth”, and “stewed eels”.
Crews were also busy building the fascias of shopfronts, such as an opticians. Other shops which will form part of the scenery include a coffin-maker, a ‘rag and metal’ merchant, and a drug shop.
Although the road is closed to traffic, pedestrians still have access. Several pubs and bars, including The Lion and Key, have indicated they will be open as usual.
Posting on Facebook, the Lion and Key said: “Woohoo! The film set is getting built, don’t worry we are open as usual…why not pop by and see what it’s all about?”
Previous productions that used Hull as a filming location were The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019), Victoria (2019), Enola Holmes 2 (2022), Blitz (2024), and Dastaar (2025). Miniseries, such as Netflix’s Bodies, also brought Hull into the limelight.
