The free-to-use repair stations contain essential tools and bike pumps

New cycle repair stations have been installed at a number of East Riding Leisure centres to help bike riders get back on the road. East Riding Council’s road safety team has fitted the self-service cycle kits to the outside of six leisure centres across the East Riding to make it easier for residents and visitors to access bike repair equipment if it is ever needed.

The free-to-use repair stations, containing essential tools and bike pumps, are now available at East Riding Leisure sites in Bridlington, Beverley, Driffield, Haltemprice, Withernsea and Hornsea.

The project has been funded by Active Travel England, which aims to encourage cycling as a convenient, sustainable and healthy mode of transport as well as supporting people choosing to travel by bike. Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We’ve fitted this equipment at easy-to-reach locations to help cyclists if they are out and about and need to make urgent repairs to their bikes.

“Whether people are commuting, exercising or exploring our beautiful area, these repair stations will help to ensure any minor mechanical issues don’t stop people getting out on a bike. It’s another way for us to promote cycling as a convenient way for everyone to get active, stay fit and travel around the East Riding in a sustainable way.”

Tim Hicks, health and wellbeing facilities manager at the council, said: “The cycle repair stations bring a real benefit to local communities. This scheme supports and encourages people to cycle with confidence, knowing there is a safe, accessible place to stop if they need to make a quick DIY repair.

“Our East Riding Leisure sites are fully committed to supporting active travel and providing a welcoming hub for everyone who chooses to travel around the area by bike.” The repair stations are conveniently located and easily accessible, directly opposite the main entrance to each leisure centre.

Handy “How To” guides are available by scanning the QR code displayed on each station, making them suitable for cyclists of all experience levels. The road safety team will be holding a number of launch demonstration events for the repair stations throughout May for anyone interested in finding out more and learning how to use the kits. They are being held at:

  • East Riding Leisure Haltemprice – Monday, May 11, 10am-noon
