The Goole Museum is displaying items largely donated by residents

A new exhibition exploring Goole via 200 “weird and wonderful objects” is due to launch in the town in the coming weeks. Goole 200: A History of Goole in 200 Objects has been announced for the town’s bicentenary celebrations.

It comes to Goole Museum from Saturday, May 23 and will take visitors through two centuries of history, pulling items from the museum’s collections. Nearly all of the objects on display were donated by Goole locals with the exhibition being billed as a celebration of the people’s history.

Some artefacts tell the story of Goole’s origins and growth as a port, alongside the development of other industries such as shipbuilding, clothes manufacturing and alum working. Other items show visitors about childhood, home life, recreation and healthcare in the town.

There are also items to mark dramatic milestones in Goole’s history including the World Wars and grand public celebrations. Visitors are told they can also look out for the “spotlight” objects, which are said to reveal a particularly special story.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “Goole 200 is a wonderful celebration of our town and its people. By telling Goole’s story through objects donated by local residents, this exhibition at Goole Museum brings our shared history to life in a way that feels personal, engaging and authentic.

“It’s a fitting centrepiece for our bicentenary celebrations and a fantastic opportunity for visitors of all ages to connect with Goole’s past, present and future.”

The Goole 200 exhibition will open with a public launch event at 1pm on May 23 before running until Saturday, July 4.
