There will be no end-of-season event for Sergej Jakirovic’s players

Hull City have explained their rationale behind their decision to cancel this season’s End of Season Awards evening, which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday night.

It’s the second consecutive season the showpiece event has been shelved, owing to events on the field by bosses at the MKM Stadium.

City say they have cancelled the event to allow Sergej Jakirovic and his players to focus on a huge game against Norwich City on Saturday in the fight for the play-offs.

The Tigers go into the final game of the regular campaign seventh in the Championship, and only outside the top six on goal difference after Wrexham’s 3-1 loss at champions Coventry City on Sunday afternoon.

Derby County are a place and behind City, but have a better goal difference, should that come into it, with the Rams hosting out-of-form Sheffield United, while Wrexham welcome Middlesbrough to the Racecourse.

Even a point would be enough for the Tigers, who are winless in their last six, should both Wrexham and Derby lose, but victory would see them leapfrog Phil Parkinson’s side, provided they score at least one more than the Welsh outfit.

“With our play-off place to be decided on the final day of the season, a decision has been made to ensure the squad’s complete focus remains on our last regular league fixture against Norwich City,” City said in a statement. “It’s a decision not taken lightly, but one made in the interests of the first team squad.”

It’s understood the club plans to announce the winners of this year’s awards after Saturday’s game, which could yet see the Tigers end the campaign inside the play-off zone, and keep their Premier League dreams alive.
