Rovers still have a number of retention and recruitment calls to make

Willie Peters insists he is still more than happy to offer an opinion on Hull KR recruitment and retention decisions, should he be asked.

Rovers don’t have too much room to manoeuvre for next season with the Robins’ next head coach due to inherit a settled and well-balanced squad when he takes over at the end of the year. As such, while there might be the odd bit of business to be done, KR aren’t expected to make too many changes to their first-team squad.

There are a number of retention decisions still to be made, though, with Rhyse Martin and Sauaso Sue being the most high profile players off contract at the end of the season.

They’re both playing a key role in Peters’ side at present, but given their ages, with Martin being 33 and Sue 34, KR will be looking at them closely before making a decision one way or the other.

The new head coach, when he is appointed, will have a say on that too, but Peters insists he would be more than willing to give his opinion should CEO Paul Lakin look his way for an input.

“Next season will obviously be the new coach that comes in along with Paul Lakin and there’s only a couple of spots there at the moment and renewals in Jesse Sue and Rhyse Martin that the club need to look at,” Peters said on the club’s recruitment and retention status.

“Both are playing well and Jesse is still on the top of his game and Rhyse is back and playing well again. The new coach when he comes in will have the say in that.

“I’ll obviously, if asked, certainly give feedback, but it’s Paul Lakin and the new coach looking after that now.”

Peters has already outlined his willingness to be a sounding board for the CEO when it comes to finding his successor and he has given takes on a number of candidates so far, with the interview process for the position now underway.

“He’s told me a few names and asked my opinion about a few coaches,” Peters added. “Paul is in the process now along with the board of going through some interviews.

“I’m just there if he needs me but the board and Paul will make the decisions and interview the next coach.”
