Hull-born BAFTA winner Robert Aramayo starred in psychological thriller years before his I Swear triumph, with fans saying the Netflix series still ‘haunts’ them

Hull-born actor Robert Aramayo recently scooped the coveted best actor award at the BAFTA Awards, outshining Hollywood bigwigs Timothee Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The accolade was for his performance in I Swear, where he plays the real-life Tourette’s advocate John Davidson. The film is based on a true story and portrays John’s challenges growing up with the condition in Scotland during the 1980s.

However, long before his significant BAFTA triumph, Robert featured in a lesser-known Netflix series, widely acclaimed by its fans for its startling twist ending.

Launched in 2021, the six-part thriller Behind Her Eyes narrates the tale of single mother Louise (Simona Brown) who initiates an affair with her boss David (Tom Bateman). After encountering David’s wife Adele (Eve Hewson), Louise soon discovers that their relationship isn’t as straightforward as it appears.

Robert portrays the enigmatic and eerie Rob Hoyle in the series, who viewers discover is an old acquaintance of Adele’s. The true essence of their relationship unfolds as the series advances, reports the Mirror.

The show is adapted from the 2017 novel of the same title by Sarah Pinborough and currently holds a 60 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have given it a slightly higher rating of 63 per cent.

“Very gripping with an excellent twist,” penned one viewer. Another added: “Just finished this one and I gotta say that it’s such a great mind-bending show. This is a prime example that you don’t need a cosmic budget to make a good show if the writing’s excellent.”

A third fan of the programme gushed: “The ending of this show is so amazing that I still wake up traumatised all these years later. I wish I could watch this show for the first time again.”

Meanwhile, a fourth viewer commented: “A epic plot twist. A very interesting series that I really enjoyed every episode. The kinda show to watch two or three times to gather all the clues to plot twist.”

A further Netflix fan said the series still “haunts” them, explaining: “This show really grew on me. It has a fabulous plot twist at the end, which made me do an immediate rewatch of the whole series. The story is deeply strange and interesting and it has stayed with me. It kind of haunts me actually.”
