Everything you need to know about upcoming traffic signal upgrade work at major Hull city centre junction

  1. Hull City Council is upgrading the traffic signals at the Ferensway and Anlaby Road junction starting Monday, February 16.
  2. Existing signals will be replaced with “modern, low‑energy LED technology,” which aims to significantly improve energy efficiency and “reduce carbon emissions, improve traffic flow and enhance safety”.
  3. The work is scheduled for the half-term break to take advantage of lower traffic levels and keep disruption to a minimum.
  4. The scheme is expected to take five days ( weather permitting), with the junction reverting to permanent operation as soon as work finishes.
  5. During the works, which are being carried out by SWARCO, “four‑way temporary traffic signals – including full pedestrian crossing facilities – will be in place” for the safety of contractors and the public. If the work is completed ahead of schedule, the junction will “revert to permanent signal operation as soon as possible”.
  6. Councillor Mark Ieronimo described the project as a “smart and sustainable investment” that will reduce the council’s carbon footprint while improving reliability at one the city centre’s busiest junctions. Acknowledging potential delays, the portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure added: “We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve this key city centre junction.”
