Creatures to feature among the guests included a hedgehog and a tortoise

Residents at a care home in Hornsea were treated to a visit from some unusual guests. Care UK’s Mere Hall welcomed a variety of creatures into the home, including a hedgehog, rabbit, snake and tortoise, during an afternoon of animal therapy.

Residents of the Strickland Drive home were able to handle and stroke the animals brought in by Furry Friends Animal Therapy, before learning about how to care for the different creatures and their favourite foods. Mere Hall resident, Helen, said: “Hedgehogs are so sweet, especially the one that visited; it was such a great experience.”

Jan Gledhill, home manager at Mere Hall, said: “We are always looking for new and exciting experiences for residents to try here at the home. We thought a visit from some animal friends would be a great way to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

“The session was a huge success, and it was lovely to hear residents reminisce and share stories about their own family pets. Animal therapy is hugely beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it can help lift a person’s mood and encourage social interaction.
