City have clinched their third signing of the January window

Experienced defender Paddy McNair is the latest new face to join Hull City‘s promotion surge, after penning an 18-month contract at the MKM Stadium, with a further 12 month option.

The Northern Ireland international came to an agreement to end his contract in the MLS with San Diego, which was due to run until December 2027, with the option of an extra 12 months.

McNair was at the MKM Stadium on Saturday to watch City win a third game in the space of a week to see off a spirited Swansea City side, and strengthen their grip on a place in the play-offs.

The 30-year-old from Ballyclare came through the ranks at Manchester United and played 27 times for the Red Devils’ senior side before moving to Sunderland and then Middlesbrough, where he played 219 times, scoring 14 times and racking up 16 assists.

He left Teesside in May 2024 after six years and moved to the MLS, but came back for a short spell at West Brom, returning Stateside to finish the MLS season. San Diego’s campaign begins next month, with McNair having been in pre-season since their campaign finished.

His last appearance came in mid-November when he played 90 minutes for Northern Ireland in their 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Luxembourg.

McNair is expected to be in City’s squad that heads to Ewood Park on Saturday to take on a Blackburn Rovers side that have won just once in their last 10, and have won only two games at home all season.

The Tigers are also expected to confirm the loan arrival of United midfielder Toby Collyer in the next 48 hours. Collyer, it’s understood, is expected at City on Wednesday to complete the formalities of his move. Like McNair, he’s also expected to be in the squad at Ewood Park.

Provided the club can move somebody out before the deadline on Monday night, they’ll also clinch the signing of Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas.
